Lithium batteries came onto the scene around 2012. These batteries changed the way golf carts performed. 

They are little to no maintainence and have an incredibly long life compared to traditional batteries. 

A standard battery on average in Texas heat and average rounds played a year will last 3-4 years max if you take diligent care of them. A set of lithium batteries will last 8-10 years.
